![]() ![]() I would like someone who really knows what's really going on (someone in the assembly line?) to explain why this would be this way. There was a response to th3rt10n's question, provided by MrHoffman: "System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > select Full Disk Access on the left, add Terminal.app on the right, and see if things work better." I have a feeling if I had tested this upon unboxing It would have behaved identically. So the machine has received a fair amount of use. I actually started with Big Sur, and within weeks was pestered to upgrade to Monterey, which I did. And that led to this forum, where it was asked by th3rt10n about Catalina in 2021. But trying to ls the Desktop folder form the containing folder, using sudo, switching to root via su (something I have not had to do for YEARS) and getting the same result, DROVE me to Google for answers. ![]() I know enough to intuit that this is odd behavior, the very first time. I probably *should have* tried this after unboxing, but who knew!? Opening a terminal and cd'ing to the Desktop, the ls operation (that's ell ess) fails with "Operation not permitted". I have installed a few apps (homebrew, docker, IntelliJ, nothing too weird) for my job. Ls Desktop Operation (still) not Permitted I have a brand new Mac Book Pro with the M1 chip. I'd very much appreciate it if anyone could offer insight into the problem – and hopefully a fix. I wonder if the problem is something to do with third-party apps such as Default Folder or TotalFinder but why did it suddenly happen now, when neither of those have been updated recently? Also, since I had just activated "Secondary Click" in Mouse preferences, whether that's the problem. I tried to install the latest Catalina update (10.15.5) but, in the installer, I couldn't get past the Continue button as it didn't work.I attached another keyboard and mouse, but that didn't work either. ![]() I booted in Safe Mode, where the problem also existed.I didn't want to delete any more plist files because I'm not sure what unintended consequences that would have. I deleted the Library Preference files, , and files (but not any others) and rebooted.I can only close windows and tabs by pressing Cmd-W (which I do normally anyway, so not a big deal). In window tabs (and Safari tabs) I can only navigate between them by using keyboard shortcuts, not by clicking on them.Applications seem to work until I open a dialog box for example, links in Safari mostly work, although not buttons/checkboxes in pop-up dialogs.Menu items (in the Menu Bar) seem to work okay so I can open individual System Preferences although I can't configure anything in them.I can't open windows, files or applications by double-clicking on them, but I can open them via the Dock.Buttons in dialog boxes don't work, although some respond to keyboard commands such as the initial letter of the button name.I can't move windows around the desktop. One clue as to what was happening was that every time – and everywhere – I clicked the mouse, whether on an open window or on the desktop, a contextual menu would pop up, as though I had click-pressed the Control key (and no, there wasn't anything resting on the key!). I say "partially" because there were still some things I could do, but many others I couldn't. Is this a new "feature" in Catalina? Is there a way to turn it off?įinder windows not functioning properly (Catalina) All of a sudden Finder windows on my iMac became partially unresponsive. But it simply prevents the action, without explanation. If the System asked for authentication to modify the window, say to copy something into the window – as happens with a Mojave or Sierra startup drive – that would make sense. However, with a Catalina drive that is not the startup drive, I can do all these things. I can't copy anything into the window, nor delete anything to the Trash (of course I'm not deleting the 4 official folders, but something else that's been added, which can be done when the drive is not the startup drive ). If I move the edge of the window to make it narrower, the icons stay where they are so one disappears, rather than rearranging themselves so they're all still visible. If I pick one up and try to move it, a prohibited glyph appears on it, and it snaps back to where it was. They're all in a row alphabetically, and cannot be moved. I like to arrange the folders (System, Library, Applications, Users) in a custom setup, but I can't. I've run into a strange problem: The main window (root directory) of the MacOS Catalina drive is locked (cannot be modified) when it is the startup drive. I've also installed it (and the other OSes) on an external drive. I'm just starting to work with Catalina, installed it fresh on my spare MacBook Pro (along with Sierra and Mojave on other partitions). ![]()
